This Riverwest family wanted to transform their backyard by removing two old, small rear decks and creating a double deck, the lower of which could be enjoyed year-round. Eventually, the homeowners want the option to change the locations of their rear entry doors and fully enclose both the upper and lower decks for bug protection.
JJB Home Improvements designed and built a custom double deck that significantly improved flow and usability in the backyard. A rubber membrane system was installed beneath the upper deck, creating a dry, weather-protected lower deck that can be enjoyed rain or shine.
The partially open stair design allows easy yard access—especially for the homeowners’ dogs—while maintaining a clean, intentional look. The deck’s generous length and width were designed with future flexibility in mind, allowing for potential relocation of exterior doors and future enclosure options.
To balance durability with warmth, the homeowners selected low-maintenance composite decking paired with modern horizontal cedar railings. Naturally resistant to rot, cedar provides a natural aesthetic that complements the home’s bungalow style while updating the overall look of the exterior.
1–2 Months
Preparing CAD drawings, engineering, and permitting typically takes anywhere from a few days to one month, depending on municipal requirements and project complexity.
Optional upgrades such as skirting and soffits can add refined finishing touches. Soffits enclose ceiling joists beneath the upper deck, while skirting conceals the deck’s substructure. These enhancements typically add 1–3 days to a project of this size.
